Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) is advancing the construction of eight Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard under a ₹473 crore contract awarded by the Ministry of Defence in March 2022. These vessels are being built at GSL’s facility in Vasco da Gama, Goa, as part of India's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative to bolster indigenous defense manufacturing.
Key Features of the Adamya-Class FPVs
Design and Capabilities: Each vessel measures approximately 52 meters in length with a beam of 8 meters and is capable of speeds exceeding 27 knots. They are equipped with advanced navigation and control systems. The FPVs are designed for multiple roles, including coastal patrol, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, fisheries protection, search and rescue operations, and providing communication links during wartime. Notably, over 60% of the components used are of indigenous origin.
Construction Progress
Launches:
October 28, 2024: The first two vessels, Adamya (256) and Akshar (257), were launched using GSL’s Ship Lift System.
January 6, 2025: The third and fourth vessels, Amulya (258) and Akshay (259), were launched.
Timeline: The contract stipulates that all eight vessels are to be delivered within 45 months from the signing date, setting the completion deadline around December 2025.
Strategic Significance
These FPVs are integral to enhancing the Indian Coast Guard's capabilities in monitoring the nation's vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and responding to maritime threats. The project also contributes to local employment and strengthens India's defense manufacturing sector.
